Super Sammy Turns Five

Happy birthday to my favorite five-year-old in the whole world. I love you so much.

WHY I MADE IT

His Main Character Moment

I didn’t want to get him another toy he’d play with for a week and forget, or one more stuffie for the pile.

I wanted to give him something special. So I took some of the millions of photos I have of him and created a coloring book where he’s the main character.

"You wore the cape to breakfast, to the mailbox, to your own birthday party. Some things you don’t take off."
— FROM THE FIRST PAGE OF SUPER SAMMY TURNS FIVE

Right now he's still convinced the cape works, sticking his tongue through the gap where his front tooth used to be, still three chords into a guitar career that started in March.

Most of this will be gone by six, and this book lets us hold on to it for as long as there are pages to color.

what's inside

Super Sammy Turns Five

The cover, the pages, the love.

  • "The tooth came out on a Tuesday, mid-flight off the arm of the couch. The cape wasn't working that day."

  • "Some nights you fell asleep still wearing it. We left it on. A superhero doesn't clock out."

  • "Red fabric, frayed at the collar, flying half a step behind you down the hallway, every day this year."

THE REACTION

He Couldn't Believe It

“THAT’S ME!” Sammy screamed when he saw the cover. He didn’t say much else after that. Just turned another page, pointed, and looked at us like he needed to check it was really him.

At the last page, he jumped off the couch, teeth intact this time, and came back holding a red crayon ready to color.

Five is loud and chaotic most of the time. So was four, for that matter. Sitting there, red crayon moving left to right, Sammy smiling, quiet. This ended up being a gift for us as much as for him.
